Presidents' Day 2009 Are All Presidents Celebrated

Here is an excerpt from Wikipedia describing the history of Presidents' Day.

Titled Washington's Birthday, the federal holiday was originally implemented by the Congress of the United States of America in 1880 for government offices in the District of Columbia (20 Stat. 277) and expanded in 1885 to include all federal offices (23 Stat. 516). As the first federal holiday to honor an American citizen, the holiday was celebrated on Washington's actual birthday, February 22. On January 1, 1971 the federal holiday was shifted to the third Monday in February by the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. A draft of the Uniform Holidays Bill of 1968 would have renamed the holiday to Presidents' Day to honor both Washington and Lincoln, but this proposal failed in committee and the bill as voted on and signed into law on June 28, 1968 kept the name Washington's Birthday.
By the mid-1980s, with a push from advertisers, the term "Presidents' Day" began its public appearance.[1] The theme has expanded the focus of the holiday to honor another President born in February, Abraham Lincoln, and often other Presidents of the United States. Although Lincoln's birthday, February 12, was never a federal holiday, approximately a dozen state governments have officially renamed their Washington's Birthday observances as "Presidents Day", "Washington and Lincoln Day", or other such designations. However, "Presidents Day" is not always an all-inclusive term. In Massachusetts, while the state officially celebrates "Washington's Birthday," state law also prescribes that the governor issue an annual Presidents Day proclamation honoring the presidents that have come from Massachusetts: John Adams, John Quincy Adams, Calvin Coolidge, and John F. Kennedy.[2] (Coolidge, the only one born outside of Massachusetts, spent his entire political career before the vice presidency there. George H. W. Bush, on the other hand, was born in Massachusetts, but has spent most of his life elsewhere.) Alabama uniquely observes the day as "Washington and Jefferson Day", even though Jefferson's birthday was in April.[3] In New Jersey, Connecticut and Illinois, while Washington's Birthday is a federal holiday, Abraham Lincoln's birthday is still a state holiday, falling on February 12 regardless of the day of the week. In California, Lincoln's Birthday is also a legal state holiday, however, observance is frequently moved to the Monday or Friday occurring closest to February 12. When Lincoln's Birthday is observed on the Friday preceding Washington's Birthday, the resultant four-day weekend is commonly called "Presidents' Day Weekend", particularly by retailers in their sale advertisements.

Over the last 25 years, most of the Presidents have been favorable to the chiropractic profession. They have included chiropractic in the Medicare program, giving millions of retirees access to chiropractic care. Barack Obama also made a statement prior to be elected that he would work to help chiropractic gain more footing in the health care system.

Thomas Edison was never a President, but he did state, "The doctor of the future will give no medicine, but will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease." Brilliantly stated and no more true than today, this statement has been the mantra for chiropractic since its inception in 1895. Chiropractic has tried to look at the person as a whole, find the cause of the problem and try to teach the patient how to prevent it from recurring.

Let's hope all future Presidents get this message and we can all start living healthier longer.

10 Ways To Improve Your Health & Boost Your Immune System

10 Ways To Improve Your Health & Boost Your Immune System

1. Avoid All Refined Suger: Most of the unrefined sugar we take in is unneeded calories to start with.

2. Take Supplements: Many of us, with our fast food diets, are not getting the daily bodily requirements of vitamins and minerals. Take a Multi-Viiitamin to ensure you get the bascis everyday, and consider taking fish oils. They benefit the whole body.

3. Get Some Exercise: You have heard this one for years, but it is a necessity that many dread. You do not have to be Lance Armstrong, but you need at least 20 minutes 3X per week. Don't do what you don't want to do. Find an exercise you enjoy doing and stick to it. If you have to exercise, you might as well do something you enjoy.

4. Get Chiropractic Care: It loosens muscles, reduces pain, improves overall health, and has it has been shown that regular chiropractic adjustments improve immune system function. Go to www.acwclinic.com

5. Laugh: Laughter is the best medicine. Watch more half-hour comedy shows, Comedy Central, rent more comedy movies at Blockbuster. Learn to laugh at yourself as well. The happiest and least stressed people have discovered that they can laugh at themselves, their mistakes, and still pick themselves up and learn from it and have fun.

6. Reduce Alcohol Consumption: While it may be fun once and awhile to knock a few back and have a good time, it should be done it moderation. Alcohol is an immune system suppressant.

7. Monitor Your Body pH: When one's body is in a more alkaline state, there is growing evidence that they will not get sick as often. Avoid food and beverages that turn your body acidic. Here is a good website to help: http://www.thewolfeclinic.com/pdf/Alkaline_Food_Chart.pdf

8. Avoid All Negative Thoughts&Emotions;: Studies have shown that just thinking negative thoughts has a detrimental effect on your health. Eliminate all the bad news that you can see and read in the newspapers, on the internet, and on TV. Just concentrate on the good stories and be thankful for what you have and your health will inprove.

9. Forgive: Forgive everyone you hold a grudge against, resent, or feel anger toward. Forgive them by writing a letter, but do not send it. You can telll them when you are ready, but forgiveness is for you, not them.

10. Pray: Be thankful for everything you have, appreciate that you are here and alive.

Barack Obama Elected 44th President Favors Chiropractic

Barack Obama was elected to be the 44th President of the US with a popular vote victory and an Electoral College victory on November 4th.

Whatever your political leanings, it's time to look at how Barack Obama will shape our country and whether or not he will help the chiropractic profession.

According to the American Chiropractic Association Barack Obama will be a friend to chiropractors and chiropractic patients. In a statement to the ACA, he wrote that he has a plan to support doctors of chiropractic by expanding the range of chiropractic services under Medicare and help chiropractors achieve full integration into the health systems of the Department of Veteran Affairs and the Department of Defense.

This will enable chiropractors to be help and serve the brave men and women of our armed forces.

Under his Universal Health Care Plan, Americans will have access to a public insurance plan with comprehensive coverage including services provided by a chiropractor.

Lastly, his plan prioritized preventative health care, which chiropractors have been preaching about for years. Barack Obama believes we need to shift our health care delivery system toward a culture of wellness and disease prevention, and chiropractors must play an integral role in expanding access to preventative care.

We can debate all day long about whether or not Obama's plan is good or bad for America, how it will get funded, and even if he will be able to implement his plan. However, for chiropractors and chiropractic patients having a friend in the White House supporting the chiropractic profession hopefully will be a good thing for our spinal health and wellness.

Financial Spinal Stress. How Stress Affects Your Spine & Your Health!

Ever woken up in the middle of the night wondering how you were going to pay the bills?

Then you know that a car payment or the electric bill can affect your health!

There are three types of stress: physical, emotional, and chemical. Financial worries (and other anxieties) fall into the emotional stress category. And chiropractic can be helpful.

All three types of stress affect your nervous system. Like a chain that breaks at its weakest link, stress tends to show up where we are most vulnerable. Our neck. Our low back. Tightness between our shoulders. Stress can increase the frequency of headaches and compromise our ability to get enough restful sleep.

Chiropractic care, with its purpose of reducing neurological stress, can be helpful. Of course chiropractic can't eliminate stress, but it sure can improve your ability to tolerate it. Regular chiropractic care now, especially with the holiday stress around the corner, could be a wise investment for a happier, healthier, and financially secure you!

Chiropractic’s Twelve Steps

Chiropractic’s Twelve Steps

1) You are more than your body; you are an intelligent and loving energetic being! Your body is the vehicle you have been given through which to experience and express your true purpose and potential in life.

2) Your Intelligent Life Energy directs and coordinates every single cell, tissue, organ and organ system in your body through your brain, and communicates with your body through your nerve system.

3) Health is defined as normal function and the ability to adapt to most of the stresses you face every day. It is the natural result of the adequate expression of your Life Energy in your body.

4) Everything is always changing, including your body. In every moment you are either getting weaker and moving toward dis-ease and death, or growing stronger and moving toward health, wellness and wholeness.

5) 3 Things are necessary to keep you growing stronger and moving consistently toward health, wellness and wholeness (1. A Deliberate & Positive Focus, 2. A Healthy Lifestyle 3. Clear Neurological Connection between your body and your brain).

6) The main function of your spine is to regulate the amount of tension in your nerve system and maintain the proper frequency of vibration or tone, so that the messages traveling back and forth along your nerves between your body and your brain are both transmitted and received properly.

7) Whenever your spine loses its normal alignment or function, it compromises your ability to regulate nerve system tension, and the result is a partial loss of CONNECTION between your brain and your body. We call this loss of connection and decrease in the expression of your Life Energy “subluxation.”

8) The loss of connection between your brain and body causes you to lose your normal function in your body, and decreases your ability to successfully adapt to all of the physical, chemical, mental and emotional stresses in your environment. In other words, it causes you to lose your natural state of EASE.

9) The problem is not that you HAVE something you shouldn’t have…it’s that you’ve LOST something you NEED in order to heal, function normally and feel good; You’ve lost the CONNECTION between your brain and body.

10) The specific Chiropractic Adjustment allows more normal function and alignment in your spine, and helps restore your ability to regulate and maintain proper nerve system tension and tone. In other words, it helps re-establish and maintain the CONNECTION between your brain and your body in order to maximize the expression of Life Energy in your body and help you HEAL.

11) Healing is defined as any movement toward wholeness, regardless of where you are at any given moment. It is a PROCESS and requires your active participation.

12) The goal of your chiropractic program is simple; it’s to help you and your family restore, maintain and steadily improve all three things necessary to keep you growing stronger and moving toward ever higher levels of health, wellness and wholeness (1. A Deliberate & Positive Focus, 2. A Healthy Lifestyle, 3. A Clear Neurological Connection between your body and your brain) for as long as you live.

Chiropractic is about helping you maximize the expression of Life Energy in your body.

Pain Is NOT The Problem!

Many people begin chiropractic care because of an ache or pain. Pain can be distracting, debilitating, irritating, or annoying. Pain can be chronic, acute, intense, or intermittent. Pain can be sharp or dull. And pain can be localized or general.

But Pain in not the problem!

Pain is a symptom. An effect. A signal. A sign. An indicator. A warning. Pain is no more a problem than a traffic signal or your alarm clock announcing that it's time to start the day.

If there is a problem, it's the meaning we attach to pain.

When we meet patients who are in pain, besides being compassionate, our first thought is that they must have exceeded some physical, chemical, or emotional limit to which they can no longer adapt. And their body is saying "Whoa!" So, while we're interested in pain, we're more interested in what was the underlying cause of the pain. Did it just happen? Has it been present a long time? What circumstances brought it on? Plus, what change(s) should the patient make to avoid this in the future?

Do you know someone who thinks pain is the problem? Please send them our way. Because pain on our practice is never a problem!

Mediterranean Diet Reduces Risk of Major Disease

Italian researchers reported in a new study that a Mediterranean style diet can reduce the risk of numerous diseases. The people in the study saw an overall drop in mortality of 9 percent, a 9 percent drop in death from cardiovascular disease, and a 13 percent reduction in cases of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, and a 6 percent drop in cancer.

The Mediterranean diet has a reputation for being a model of healthy eating and contributing to better health and quality of life, since it is rich in olive oil, grains, fruits, nuts, vegetables, and fish, but low in meat, dairy products and alcohol, reports the British Medical Journal.

It has been noticed that people in the Mediterranean region, an area of three continents, differ in their culture, tradition and food habit, but lead very similar active lifestyles and share similar eating habits. It was observed that cases of chronic heart diseases, diabetes, gallstones and cancers were minimal in the Mediterranean region.

The daily Mediterranean diet includes mostly fresh vegetables, fruit mainly as dessert, cereals, whole grain breads, pastas legumes, beans and nuts cooked in olive oil. The diet is supplemented by low to moderate use of milk, cheese and yogurt along with mostly red wine or water. Seafood, poultry and eggs are a weekly add on to the diet, and the consumption of red meat is limited to few times a month. Sweet and dessert intake is also limited to a few days a week. Fruit is the most preferred type of dessert.

The Mediterranean diet is well-balanced with a supply of essential vitamins, minerals, low in saturated fat, salt and sugar to ensure good health. As stated, people in the Mediterranean region lead active lives, but they also find enough time to relax, enjoy and socialize with every meal. This, in turn, helps in digestion of food and proper functioning of body systems.

Whiplash Can Be Helped By Chiropractic

Whiplash

You’re waiting at a stoplight. The sound of screeching tires is followed by the harsh sound of metal hitting metal. Your car is suddenly being pushed forward!

You’re being rear-ended!

In a split second, your body is pushed against your seat. Your head, isolated by your neck, delays its reaction.

Symptoms of whiplash injuries often show up long after your car has been repaired.
Then, your body changes directions, moving forward to the limits of your seatbelt. (You are wearing your seatbelt aren't you!?!) Then your head is snapped backwards. But you can’t stop it.
Even a minor fender bender can produce a whiplash injury. It may take a day or two, or sometimes months for symptoms to appear. Now what?

Get to our office for an examination! Pain pills won’t heal inflamed tendons and ligaments. Muscle relaxers won’t heal torn muscles. A cervical collar won’t restore a graceful forward spinal curve.

Specific chiropractic spinal adjustments, because they can help restore proper motion and position of individual spinal bones, can better assure proper healing.

The longer you wait the more unseen damage there is and the longer it may take to recover.

Drugs may temporarily reduce the pain, but they simply delay more effective chiropractic care.

Do You Have A Slipped or Herniated Disc & Are Looking For Relief?

Do You Have A Slipped or Herniated Disc & Are Looking For Relief?

Slipped Disc
A disc can’t slip. But it can wedge, bulge, protrude and herniate. Chiropractic care can help.

The most serious disc problem is a prolapsed disc in which the soft center ruptures and leaks.

Space for Nerves

The disc is a special cartilage between the bones of your spinal column. It attaches to the vertebra above and below it. This creates the separation between spinal bones so pairs of nerves can exit the spine.

Turning and Bending

Each spinal disc has a jelly-like “ball bearing” core that is contained by bands of fibrous tissue. Healthy discs give you flexibility for normal turning and bending. Improper lifting, slips, falls and car accidents can cause the core to shift:

Herniation - disc wedging narrows nerve openings. Obvious symptoms may not be present.

Protrusion - like a blister, the disc bulges where it is the weakest, causing nerve pressure.

Prolapse - with the cushioning and separating compromised by rupture, movement is painful.

Chiropractic First

Chiropractic has been a natural solution helping millions with a variety of disc problems.

Do I Have A Pinced Nerve?

Do You Have A Pinced Nerve?

Pinched Nerve
It's called a pinched nerve because that's what it feels like. But there's a lot more going on!

There are pairs of openings between each spinal bone.

Like an open window, nerve openings along your spine must be clear and unobstructed.

The 24 moving bones of your spine protect your spinal cord while permitting normal turning and bending. Pairs of nerve roots, one on each side, branch off your spinal cord at each segmental level to service the organs and tissues of your body. When these openings are unobstructed, your brain can properly control and regulate your body.

When a spinal bone is malpositioned, it can encroach upon these important nerve openings. Nerve irritation can result. We call that a vertebral subluxation.

Two Types

When spinal bones lose their normal motion or position, it can cause one of two types of nerve disturbances:

Compressed lesion - This is just a fancy name for a pinched nerve. What surprises many is that it's actually quite rare. More common is a...

Facilitative lesion - This is when the nerve root is stretched, twisted or chafed. Think: hard tissue rubbing on soft tissue.

But remember, bones are static structures. They don’t move unless muscles move them. And muscles don’t move bones unless commanded by the nervous system. An irritated nerve creates a vicious loop. Our job is to locate these areas of your spine and reduce their impact on your nervous system.

A Precise Nudge

A thorough examination helps us identify areas of your spine where spinal bones are stuck and not moving correctly. Then, we give them a precise little nudge called a chiropractic adjustment. Your body uses this energy to “right itself” as nerve irritation is reduced.

Because chiropractic addresses the integrity of your nervous system, it’s a natural solution to many health problems.

Do You Have Neck Pain & Live Near Shoreview, MN

Neck Pain

Imagine balancing a 12 lb. (5.5 kg.) bowling ball on the tips of your fingers.
All day long.

That’s just one of many things your neck must do. Your neck and shoulders work hard. Even the smallest deviation in the relationships of the seven bones of your cervical spine (neck) can cause pain and reduced head and neck mobility.

Minor and Major

Generally, we see two types of neck pain cases. Minor neck and shoulder pain involve sensations of discomfort, stiffness or soreness. If these symptoms last for more than a day or so, occur frequently or were preceded by an accident or some type of injury, we consider it major.

Response to Stress

Physical, emotional or chemical stress can affect the frequency and severity of neck pain. For many of us, the neck and shoulders are the “weakest link in the chain” and so stress shows up here.

Often, emotional stress is the overlooked culprit. Ever hear of something being a “pain in the neck”? Fear, anger or frustration can trigger the tightening of our neck muscles without our even being conscious. In time, chronic muscle spasms set in. Which can lead to headaches.
Some over-the-counter pain reliever might dull the pain, but it ignores the underlying cause!

Consult Our Office

We see this sort of thing all the time. It’s almost routine. “Chiropractic care has a history of producing excellent results with those suffering from neck pain. And we do it naturally, without drugs or surgery.

At Advanced Chiropractic & Wellness Clinic we specialize in reducing interference to the nervous system in the neck. Many of our patients find that chiropractic care gives them relief from both minor and major neck and shoulder complaints.

Call our office with your questions. Schedule a no-obligation consultation and find out if you’re a good candidate for today’s safe and natural chiropractic care.

Does Chiropractic Work? Skepticism & Myths About Chiropractic

For Skeptics Only

Are you skeptical?

It's okay to be skeptical. But learn the simple facts about today's chiropractic.

If chiropractic care seems promising, but you have doubts, join the club. Chiropractic is different. And it is this difference that has brought results to millions since 1895 and caused them to rethink the nature of health and the role of chiropractic care in it.

Once and for all, let’s put to rest some of the most common myths:
Chiropractic isn’t scientific.
Chiropractors are poorly educated.
Chiropractors aren’t real doctors.
Chiropractic adjustments cause stroke.
Once you go, you have to go for the rest of your life.
Don’t fix it if it’s not broken.
My medical doctor wouldn’t approve.
Chiropractic isn’t appropriate for children.
You need a referral to see a chiropractor.
Chiropractic results are just the placebo effect.

If these myths were true, chiropractic would have disappeared long ago, just like bloodletting and countless other ineffective procedures. But not only has chiropractic survived, it's thriving as more and more people want a safe and natural approach to better health that avoids drugs or surgery.

What Are Chiropractic Adjustments?

Chiropractic adjustments are the most essential part of your care.

Spinal joints that aren’t moving right can choke or irritate nearby nerves. Chiropractic adjustments add motion to these stuck joints, reducing nervous system disruption. Then, health can return.

Like lifting a heavy rock off your toe, our patients often report a pleasant sense of release directly following their adjustments.

Many Techniques

Sometimes a specific, highly-accurate thrust is used. Or an instrument delivers carefully directed energy. Or a slow, constant pressure is used. Several areas may be adjusted, or just one. Sometimes a popping sound is heard.

Feels Great

Because we rely on adjustments to help your body “right itself", we’re experts.
Most patients report a sense of well-being and ease. After all, if adjustments weren't pleasant, our patients wouldn’t return for the multiple visits needed to retrain their spine!

Everyone Benefits

Newborns, infants, children, seniors and even back surgery patients can get adjusted. Naturally, adjustments are tailored to your size, age and particular health issue.

Find out for yourself by scheduling a no-obligation consultation to discuss your problem.

Chiropractic in 100 words or less

Chiropractic in 100 words or less

Aches and pains are signs that your body isn’t working right.
Your brain, spinal cord and all your nerves control how your body works.
Physical, chemical or emotional stresses produce a defensive posture.
Muscles contract, locking spinal joints that pinch or irritate nearby nerves.
Lack of nervous system integrity sets the stage for disease and ill health.
A thorough examination helps chiropractors find these vertebral subluxations.
Applying a precise force to stuck spinal joints helps the body right itself.
Health usually returns as repeated visits restore nervous system integrity.
That’s why chiropractic care has helped millions get well and stay well.

What Are Subluxations?

What are vertebral subluxations?

A vertebral subluxation is the result of spinal bones with improper motion or position affecting nerve communications between your brain and your body.

sub = less than luxation = dislocation

A vertebral subluxation is a stress response. Muscles go into spasm. Spinal bones lock up. And adjacent nerves are choked or chafed. This interferes with the control and regulation of your body. This garbles communications between the brain and parts of your body.

A dropped cell phone call is irritating. But dropped communications between your brain and your body can seriously impair your health!

Distorted nerve communications can be an underlying cause of many health problems beyond just headaches and back pain. For example. Interfere with nerve impulses going to or from your stomach: stomach problems.

Your nervous system controls every cell, tissue, organ and system of your body. These nerve impulses travel through your spine. So having a spine free of vertebral subluxation is essential for optimal health.

Only a chiropractic examination can detect vertebral subluxations. And only chiropractic adjustments can reduce their effect to your nervous system, naturally.

Find out if you have vertebral subluxations before they become more serious and more difficult to correct
